Brining all new meaning to the “loony left” , Simon Whitby, Labour Councillor for Stakesby on Whitby Town Council has claimed that he has fathered an alien baby. The baby’s name is Zarka and the mum’s name is Cat Queen. He claims to have sex with the alien about four time a year. However, it’s definitely not cheating as he explains:

My wife found out about it and was very unhappy, clearly. That caused a few problems, but it is not on a human level, so I don’t see it as wrong.

He added he got more sense out fo the aliens than out of Scarborough Town Hall.

Caroline Lucas MP, the head of the Green Party and anti-misogyny campaigner was told to cover up when wearing the “Say No to Page Three” campaign T Shirt in Parliament by Jimmy Hood – an MP so concerned about Parliamentry standards he decided to claime thousands of pounds in Parliamentry expenses without submitting receipts (including up to 400 pounds a month on food).

Mr Hood stood laid down the law on Parliamentry dress in a fetching pink jumper.

His outrage peaked at Lucas’ actual display of the newspaper that was being debated – a newspaper that is freely distributed around the House of Commons. As Caroline Lucas wrote in an earlier letter to the Commons authorities:

”I do not think that a newspaper that persists in carrying images which are degrading to women should be widely available across the parliamentary estate. I am sure you will be aware that there is a strong link between the portrayal of women as sexual objects with attitudes that underpin violence and discrimination against women and girls.”

Mr Hood continued his ongoing dialogue with the public going on twitter after the event. However, he was strangely quiet on this particular topic, instead continuing his personal campaign for everyone to know how many followers he has:

He has 185 followers. Caroline Lucas has 59,000 and constantly engages with the issues the public care about. Still Jim is wearing a regulation tie in his picture.

By the end it was hard to work out if Alex Jones had actually become more red faced than Andrew Neil. To be fair to Alex Jones though, he has raised the profile of the Bilderberg group in the UK more in one interview than the rest of the media put together. However, his motives for this were called into question by Neil:

The Labour Party is not without its past indiscretions in Liverpool, immediately the former influence of the Militant Left and the unpalatable Derek Hatton springs to mind. Therefore the sight of Councillor Jake Morrison and Luciana Berger MP bickering in public (largely due to Councillor Morrison’s decision to publish internal correspondence online), is an unwelcome sight.

Much has been made of Miss Berger’s privileged background: privately educated and a friend of Euan Blair’s. In addition there were allegations of her being parachuted into the area to fight the Wavertree seat at the 2010 election (where she duly won election); arriving from North London and the nuanced connotations that can bring. However, she appears to be a competent MP who is willing to engage with various causes.

But as James Caan and Nick Clegg are hypocritically advocating this week privilege alone should not guarantee career success; therefore one can understood legitimate questions being raised about the selection process.Conversely reverse discrimination should not be permitted to preclude a candidacy of a person who is not ‘one of the constituency’s own.’ Indeed Liverpool as a locality is a place which alludes a genuine wit and sense of community, but can also be somewhat insular in its viewpoint.

I felt this first hand at a fundraiser for Joe Anderson as he sought to be voted in as Mayor of Liverpool. My friend and I made the trip from London (although I was raised nearby on the Wirral) to attend, primarily to listen to the keynote speaker; Alastair Campbell. Appearance wise we could not have looked more New Labour: bespoke suits, drinking wine, dazed look at being North of Primrose Hill; as we stood uncomfortably at the pre-reception drinks amongst others more explicitly relaxed in the surrounding of a local Labour Party shindig.

Despite advising others that we were Labour voters, admittedly in attendance for reasons unrelated to a celebration of Joe Anderson, here in Liverpool due to a combination of proximity to my parents’ home and my mate’s place of work we were not well received. The majority of conversations we had that night were conducted under a veil of implicit scepticism. Indeed as the night went on that turned to people openly pointing at the ‘Tories’ in the room.

However there was one noticeable exception to these events and this was when we were introduced to Jake Morrison. He was bubbling with enthusiasm for Anderson’s candidacy, keen to instil on us what he thought were the Labour led City Council’s main achievements; as well as community causes he was involved with.

I don’t pretend to have knowledge of the inner workings of the Liverpool Labour Party, however if Morrison’s suspension is only in relation to his slack approach to script led rhetoric then the Labour Party need to tread carefully. Clearly adherence to internal party discipline and the directives of the wider Party are important, but a heavy handed approach to what appears to be immature exuberance should not be prosecuted too harshly.

At a time when anti-politics is heavily in vogue and Peter Kellner’s Telegraph article provides worrying evidence that the public do not believe politicians, even when they are telling the truth, it is imperative that political parties present a varied identity. People, especially those of Morrison’s age, should be encouraged to actively engage with politics; furthermore politicians with a link to the community they serve are a necessary. But there is also a place for politicians who, whilst not personally aligned to the constituency or area they act for, have skills that are an asset to the locality, the Party and the nation as a whole. A satisfactory combination of the two is the necessary composition for the Labour Party in Liverpool and beyond.
